A Plague On All Their Homophobic Minds.

The news of the anti-homosexual ignorance of those in power in Nigeria reached me recently, and I couldn't help but mourn for the death of education, reason and intelligence.
The prohibition of homosexual partnerships passed through Nigeria's senate last week and it was decided that people entering civil partnerships or cohabitation will face jail for up to 14 years. It was also claimed that they were "protecting humanity and family values". They even went as far as claiming that they were "protecting civilization in its entirety."

My Fears

So a whole lot of disappointing stuff has happened in my life this year. I mean real life disappointing stuff. Not the one that happens when your friend forgets to bring your calculator on the day you have a math exam. Way way deeper than that. For those of you who've been reading this blog for a while, you'll understand what I'm taking about. So here's a list of things I'm scared my experience will bring.

It's My Way, What's Yours?

I've just realised something that annoys me. I like to think of things that make me happy, sad, angry, etc. so  that when someone asks, I don't have to go all: "Hmm, I don't know. Let me think. Hmm. Hmm"
That's annoying. Then again, it's probably just me.

Anyway, one thing that grinds my gears is people telling me to take a chill pill and stop being anti-social or uptight, telling me to have fun sometimes, and stop staying indoors or reading. -_-

First of all, just like shopping or playing football is your hobby, I like to think reading and sitting inside my house are my hobbies too. What's it to you?

New Religious Movements: Just How Far Is Too Far?

They may be classified as ‘religious’ movements, but do cult leaders know where to draw the line between the acceptable, or dare I say the normal, and the atypical? This is a question that undoubtedly hassles the mind of the average member of society, especially as cults are proving to have a more negative than positive impact on humanity and social order.

One of the ‘religious’ movements that have left a glaringly ugly scar on humanity, and possibly Christianity, is The People's Temple which was founded by Jim Jones in the 1950s. This is the story of the amount of power a vision and a mission can conjure, it is the story of a man who wanted to free the people from “the opiate of religion using religion”. Some may wonder how plausible such a quest is, but Jim Jones saw a way, he saw a path that summoned him and he followed it through. He followed it through to Doomsday.

How he did this, one might ask. Well, it was easy for him. Jim Jones, who called himself a Marxist, found ways in which he could relate with ethnic minorities, those who felt the wrath of discrimination in disparate America. He was, to them, someone who loved them and wanted to help them, so he provided a sort of “coping strategy” for them. Jim Jones made the people believe that there was a family that cared for them in his place of worship, his ‘church’. Sociologically speaking, one would say that he provided a surrogate family for his followers. Functionalist sociologists argued that the family fulfils reproductive, educational, sexual and economical functions for its members; undoubtedly, Jones provided these in excess.

Clearly, he started this with good intentions, but where did it all go wrong? What got to Jim Jones? What made him believe that what the world needed was a “revolutionary suicide”, a total destruction in the name of an ultimate salvation? What made one man, who was supposedly Christian, dispute the existence of God, telling his followers that “there is nobody in the sky that’s going to save you”? Jim Jones said “you have to believe what you see, if you see me as a friend, I’ll be your friend. If you see me as a father, I’ll be your father. If you see me as a saviour, I’ll be your saviour. If you see me as your God, I’ll be your God.” He sure was persuasive enough to maintain his followers until the 18th November 1978, where he initiated a mass suicide and the fatality of 909 people.

So how do you know when a ‘religious’ movement is precarious? How far is too far when it comes to ‘religious’ practices? How do you decide what religious group to belong to when all of them seem to provide spiritual satisfaction? Most importantly, how do you know when you have set yourself up for a disastrous ride by subscribing to a religion that seemed the most wonderful of options? You never know, that is the simplest, most straightforward answer. You just never know. So what advice do we give people? It is not quite appropriate to tell people not to subscribe to any religious group, as beliefs are different, and people belong to each for different reasons, but we can advise people to think carefully about the practices of a group before subscribing. Just how far is too far? Think about it.

SIDE NOTE: I was asked to write a pretend newspaper article about New Religious Movements and the impacts they had on society. I rushed it, as it was impromptu, so it may seem a bit all over the place. I still thought I'd share, anyway.

Is Brain Drain A Repeat Of Slave Trade?

As a lot of people who read this blog and follow me on twitter know, I've been awaiting my Canadian Visa from the Canadian High Commission for over 3 months. This evening we visited a friend of ours who's a citizen so he could visit the Deputy High Commission tomorrow and see if he can get something done. On our way back home, my dad suddenly realised{after this i realised it oo} that Africa might never develop because the best of our people go abroad and only 10% of them come back.

Facebook Faces Suit For Tracking Logged Out Users

It's happening again! We've seen Facebook overcome law suits over the years. The most popular one being the suit with the Winklevoss twins, when they accused Mark Zuckerberg of stealing their idea. This time it's a privacy issue. An australian blogger found out 2 weekends ago, that Facebook was tracking users after they logged out with the use of its cookies. Websites usually use cookies to find location, browsing history and other user parameters so proper ads can be targeted. Turns out facebook's cookies stay on your computer longer than they should.

Love: So Simple, Yet So Complex.

How do we truly know when it's love? How do we know the right time to grab that person by the hand and whisper into their ears the emotions that consume our heart?

Is there a particular time to say it? Should one person say it first? If that person says it first, or when they feel it, what happens if one does not feel the same? Will a problem arise? Will they understand that it is only when love is felt that one should say the words, so if they don't feel that way at the time, it is okay? Will they be offended and consumed with false ideas about themselves?

What Happens When You Give Control Agencies Targets? Gross Misconduct and Misdirection: An Account of Assault by Lagos CBD Agents

From the first day I heard LASTMA, VIO and the CBD officials were given financial targets to meet by the Lagos State Government, I was like WTF? These people already had excesses as they were. Why should somebody give a control body a financial target thereby increasing their greed and the need for money. I'll never ever in my life as long as I'm not stupid or blind, stop for the VIO or the FRSC. HP Discontinues WebOS, Plans To Exit PC Market and Drops TouchPad Prices to $100 in Canada!

When HP Initially announced it's plans to Spin Off it's PC division and buy Autonomy Europe for $10Billion. I was like "Okay, For Why?". The next thing we hear, HP discontinued its WebOS platform for its TouchPad and other devices. The discontinuation of the WebOS platform is due to the very very slow sales the tablet has seen. It has potential, Yes, but it isn't selling. The day before that, BestBuy asked HP to take back it's TouchPads as only 10% of BestBuy's order sold.

CNNGo Names The Nigerian Accent The World's 5th Sexiest Accent

This is not coincidence. This is a well calculated plan. We, as Nigerians have decided to take over the world from Fashion to Music to Technology and we have now entered sexyness. *This is when you start to feel cool and order that 'Proudly Nigerian' shirt. However, CNN doesn't say which accent exactly this 'Nigerian' accent is. Is it the HFactor filled Yoruba or the thick Igbo accent or the F and P mixed up Hausa Accent. Doesn't matter anyway! As long as you're Nigerian! [Ehen @Fallering you can stop practising your British accent now].

A Broken Woman

"I can't do this anymore", and with those words, the falling of the walls of Jericho recurred. Only it was my heart. I quickly looked down because I couldn't bare the sight of this man. I couldn't stand to see what killed me. I looked down and saw even worse; the pieces of my broken heart shedding tears. They were shedding the tears I could not. They were feeling the pain my chest could not withhold. These pieces glowed like my hazel eyes on a sunny day, only that the Sun in my heart had disappeared. The Sun decided it was time to go, just as Mike decided he couldn't do anymore.

The Ethics behind LulzSec and Anonymous arrests[OPINION]

I first heard about Anonymous last year, when they responded to PayPal's shutdown of Wikileaks' account by sending multiple Denial of Service attacks to PayPal's API and making PayPal reverse its earlier shutdown decision. They also shutdown MasterCard in a few european countries - MasterCard has no legal right to shutdown anyone's account. LulzSec has been widely popular this year, after showing off security vulnerability of Sony's network services, LulZSec also attacked the CIA and the US Pentagon, leaking several files that implicated the US Government. More recenlty, LulzSec shutdown all of News International's UK websites after the news about News of the World hacking spiralled.

How do you ever know when it's love? We get these feelings and wonder. We huff, puff, twist, turn...everything. But we don't know. Maybe we do, but as humans, we seek to see to believe. Could that be why we don't know what we have till it's gone?
Speechless. Speechless, that's how you make me feel. Sat by the entrance of my house, I succumbed to the voice of a legend. It was calling me. It whispered something to me. Telling me to come. Come far, far away. Into a world of perfection. The clear, cloudless day time sky passing through my eyes and into my soul. Filling my soul with a blueness. Yet, I wasn't sad. I could feel the blue. It spread through my body like the breeze on a bright day in London. I have always been inspired by music. The music inspires me. It defines me. It triggers my thoughts. The music, the music is me.

A Book I Love: Enduring Love by Ian McEwan.

I was made to choose a book I loved and all hell broke loose. For someone like myself, a literature fanatic, why in God's sweet name will anyone prompt me to choose? Asking me to pick "a" book I love is the ultimate sin. Okay, I'm only overreacting. I guess if I really had to pick, if I really really had to pick, hmm, it'd be The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald or Enduring Love by Ian McEwan.

Bittersweet: The Longest Day

There was a time when men were kind, when their voices were soft, and their words inviting... Elaine Page's voice serenaded my ears like the soft breeze that blows through your hair on a fictional happy day. Swoosh. Only it wasn't a happy day. The longest day, it was. The longest of days, the sourest of days. It caused a feeling in my body. For the first time in my life, I couldn't describe a feeling. But I would give it a shot. The strangest, yet ever so familiar feeling. A feeling in both hands. A feeling of hurt, pain, weakness, failure...confusion. Maybe it was one or all of these things. But that was the feeling. Perhaps, the confusion I am faced with at attempting to describe what went through my body at the time is a reflection of these feelings. Sorry. I keep rambling on about my "feelings" and I knowingly shy away from the event. Maybe I am ashamed at myself. Maybe I should have done something differently. I don't know. I don't know a lot of things, this worries me.
